Custom Waterfront Home
The Macdonald residence is nestled on the Potomac River on quiet, St. Georges Island in Piney Point, Maryland. The island is surrounded by the St. Mary’s and Potomac Rivers. It has taken direct hits by many storms, including hurricanes, and has often flooded. Hurricane Sandy delayed construction on the home by several days. Severe weather was taken into consideration when designing this home. Due to the island’s history of flooding, two extra courses of block were added to the foundation to ensure the house was high and dry. A propane fired generator serves the residence as back-up power during power outages.
The house has 3,182 sq. ft. of finished space and 1,248 sq. ft. of decks and porches. It is a two-story wood frame structure on crawl space. The front of the house offers views of the Potomac River from the first and second floor, screened porches. French doors and large windows provide natural lighting to the home giving visitors and residents a warm welcome. The house has hardwood floors throughout with ceramic tile in all the bathrooms. The living room has a gas burning fireplace. The master bedroom suite occupies one wing of the house. It offers a private entrance to the deck. The second floor offers three bedrooms, each having a private bathroom. Access to the second floor can be reached either by using the stairs or the personal elevator. The second floor also offers a large open-space, lounge. The home has a two-car garage and an outside shower off the rear porch.
The home’s location is in a Critical Watershed Area of St. Mary’s County. To control stormwater and its impact on the environment, twelve “rain barrels” were installed around the home. The construction zone was kept to a minimum in another effort to minimize impact on the environment.
Difficulties faced during this project ranged from severe weather to environmental constraints. By working cooperatively with the architect and county agencies, the owners were delivered a beautiful home that they can enjoy for many years.
